5 Positive Things All Happy Families Do

happy familyFamily is important. You only have one, but no family is perfect. Everyone has to work to keep the family running smoothly and build strong relationships. Here are five things that happy families do.

1. Focus on the positives

I’m not saying you should shield your kids from the darker, complicated side of life, but there’s no reason to show it any more attention than necessary. Healthy and happy families enjoy the positive moments that make life worth living. Milk a past event by asking the kids if they remember it. If something negative happens during your day, shrug it off and redirect to the positive.

2. Value experiences and relationships

In our culture, it’s easy to get caught up in the consumption of things and forget about the truly invaluable part of life: people. Steer your children’s enjoyment toward experiences (visiting places in the world, seeing something new, a thrill or excitement) and relationships with others (conversations around the fireplace, games with friends, or giving someone a hand). Things can be broken or lost and there’s always something new and better coming out; people and experiences stay with you forever.

3. Say “thank you” a LOT

Thanking each other for your contributions is an excellent way to build quality relationships. We tend to skip these polite gestures with the people we’re close to. After all, they know we love them, do we have to say “thank you” for everything? Give thanks to each other even when you don’t mean it. You create a positive feedback loop where they feel better about helping you or answering your question and are more inclined to help you in the future.

4. Exercise regularly

Exercise has a profound effect on our lives. Not only does it strengthen our bodies, but it improves our mood and emotional well-being. People who get regular exercise are happier and more relaxed. If everyone in your house could get just twenty minutes of exercise each day, you’ll see a noticeable improvement in your physical and mental health.

5. Eat together once a day

In our hustle-and-bustle world, it can be difficult to arrange some time to sit down together and share a meal. Meal sharing is a profoundly important bonding tool in nearly every culture in the world. There’s something that’s very basic to our biology about eating together. We use meals to celebrate and to mourn. A strong, healthy family uses regular meal sharing to bond and stay connected.
