8 Qualities of a Good Diaper Bag

There is a vast array of diaper bags on the market today. You might find it difficult to choose. There are countless color, style, material, and brand options. At the end of the day, you will have to choose one the best suits your needs, but here are eight qualities every good diaper bag should have.

1. Quality Materials

Don’t be afraid to spend if you have the money. You will be using your diaper bag for two or three years, more if you have multiple children. Low quality diaper bags will typically break at the straps and zippers in less than a year.

2. Style

Just because the diaper bag is a tool doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be stylish. This part is the most fun about choosing a bag. The traditional diaper bag is the most common, a simple bag with a long handle to be slung over your shoulder.  Another style option is the backpack, which is helpful for active families. The sling bag is a variation of the backpack; it straps over your shoulder with one strap. Finally you have the messenger bag, which is worn on the hip with a strap across your body.

3. Dad-Friendly

Most diaper bags come in feminine colors and patterns, but we can’t forget about dads. Dad will feel much more comfortable carrying the diaper bag if it’s a more neutral color or style.

4. Stroller-Ready

When you’re walking around the mall or park, you don’t want to haul the diaper bag. Get a bag that can strapped or somehow affixed to your strollers. You should bring your stroller to the store when you buy a bag, or measure the stroller and compare to the strap’s dimensions if you’re buying online.

5. Straps

You definitely want a bag with padded straps to save your shoulders when you’re carrying a fully loaded bag. This is true for all models, but it’s especially helpful if you use an over-the-shoulder sling type. Diaper bags with just handles become tiresome quickly.

6. Changing Pad

Pick up a diaper bag that includes a foldable changing pad, or a bag large enough to include one. Changing pads are extremely convenient for when you’re out with your baby and you don’t have a dedicated diaper changing spot. Make sure the pad is large enough for your baby as he/she grows. You should be able to wipe it down easily.

7. Easy to Close

There’s nothing worse that loading up your diaper bag for a long day, but you can’t get it closed. You have to pack everything just right so that it stays shut, and the minute you remove something it has to be repacked again. Get a bag with a sturdy zipper that can be closed easily.

8. Pockets

You will need lots of pockets, both inside and out. Inside pockets help you separate wet or dirty clothes from the clean and dry. Outside pockets are great for quickly storing or retrieving commonly used items like toys and bottles.

Written by Stephanie Parker from Sleepingbaby.com, inventors of the Zipadee-Zip

The motto for Sleeping Baby, makers of the Zipadee-Zip, is: "Inspiring Dreams One Night at A time," and that, in a nutshell, is how it all started…with one little dream that has since become the Parker family's reality. When Brett and Stephanie Parker's daughter, Charlotte, was born, the feeling that welled up inside of them was indescribable; they never realized until first looking into those baby blues of hers that they were even capable of that kind of love.

When it was time to transition baby from swaddling, the Parkers tried every sleep sack on the market and every swaddle weaning trick they could find for nearly two weeks and nothing worked to get baby Charlotte to fall and stay asleep.

Stephanie became determined to restore sleep and sanity to their household and set out to find a solution that would soothe Charlotte's startle reflex and provide her the cozy womb-like environment she loved so much but still give her the freedom to roll over and wiggle around in her crib safely. Out of sheer desperation and exhaustion, the Zipadee-Zip was born. The first Zipadee-Zip(R) Stephanie put together on her little sewing machine worked like magic!

To date tens of thousands of Zipadee-Zips have been sold and all from word-of-mouth marketing. It is so rewarding for the Parkers to see other parents and babies getting the sleep they both need and deserve!
